Who is Adam Granduciel?

Adam Granduciel, born Adam Granofsky, is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer.

He is best known as the frontman for the indie rock band, The War on Drugs.

Granduciel was born in Dover, Massachusetts on February 15, 1979.

He is a first-generation American, born to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents.

Granduciel came up with his stage name while attending the Roxbury Latin School, an all-boys day school in West Roxbury, Boston.

His French teacher, Ken Conn, inspired his stage name – “du ciel” meaning “from the sky,” a play on “Gran-of-sky.”

Granduciel graduated from Dickinson College, a private, liberal arts college in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

While he didn’t major in music, he pursued artistic endeavors, studying painting and photography.

In 2003, after a brief stint in Oakland, California, Granduciel moved to Philadelphia, where he met Kurt Vile.

Vile would become his friend and frequent music collaborator.

The duo got their start by producing and recording lo-fi music together.

They eventually formed the band, Kurt Vile & The Violators, for which Granduciel contributed backing vocals and guitar.

The duo formed The War on Drugs in 2005, though Vile left the band – amicably – to focus on his own solo career.

“Adam was the first dude I met when I moved back to Philadelphia in 2003,” Vile said in a 2011 interview with The Line of Best Fit.

“We saw eye-to-eye on a lot of things. I was obsessed with Bob Dylan at the time, and we totally geeked-out on that.”

“We started playing together in the early days and he would be in my band, The Violators.”

“Then, eventually I played in The War On Drugs…The War On Drugs is Adam’s [band] – I just play guitar.”

The War on Drugs has released five studio albums, including Wagonwheel Blues (2008), Slave Ambient (2011), Lost in the Dream (2014), A Deeper Understanding (2017), and I Don’t Live Here Anymore (2021).

“That record was me making something that I knew was me,” Granduciel says, referring to 2014’s Lost in the Dream.

“I wasn’t sure if it was good, but I knew I was going to release it to a lot of people,” he added, in a 2017 interview with Vice.

The War on Drugs’ 2017 album, A Deeper Understanding, won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards.

The band is described as having an indie-rock, neo-psychedelia, Americana, heartland rock sound.

Current members include:

  • Adam Granduciel on vocals and guitar
  • David Hartley on bass guitar
  • Robbie Bennet on keyboards
  • Charlie Hall on drums
  • Jon Natchez on saxaphone and keyboards
  • Anthony LaMarca on guitar
  • Eliza Hardy Jones on percussion and keyboards

Beyond The War on Drugs and his collaborations with Vile, Granduciel has also collaborated with both indie and mainstream artists.

He contributed to Sharon Van Etten’s fourth studio album, Are We There (2014), produced Sore Eros’s self-titled 2020 album, and recorded a cover of the Grateful Dead’s Touch of Grey for a 2016 tribute album, Day of the Dead.

In 2024, Granduciel appeared on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, performing electric guitar in the song II Most Wanted, which also featured Miley Cyrus.

When did Krysten Ritter and Adam Granduciel start dating?

Krysten Ritter and Adam Granduciel officially began dating in the summer of 2014.

The duo met through mutual connections in the entertainment industry, with Ritter reportedly attending some of Granduciel’s live shows.

While Ritter is more well-known for her acting, she is also in an indie rock duo, Ex Vivian, with her childhood friend, William Thomas Burnett.

Ritter and Granduciel likely bonded over their shared love of music and the arts.

Ritter was previously in a relationship with Charmed actor Ivan Sergei from 2009 to 2010 and with actor Brian Geraghty, known for his roles in Big Sky and The Hurt Locker, from 2011 to 2013.

In a 2012 interview with Playboy, Ritter opened up about her thoughts on marriage.

“I was never the little girl who dreamed about a wedding or a big white dress,” she said, as reported by Us Weekly.

“It was never my thing, but I don’t think I’m sour on marriage,” she added.

“I just don’t know if I’m the type. Marriage seems scary to me.”

“I’m in a serious relationship,” she added, referring to her ex, Geraghty.

“We have a dog together. We live five minutes from each other. It’s heaven.”

“I think that might be the key: separate houses, separate bank accounts. Why mess with that?”

Ritter and Granduciel are a relatively low-key couple and rarely make public appearances together.

There was even some speculation that the couple had split back in 2021, though sources claim those rumors were false.

Ritter and Granduciel were last spotted together in November 2023, shopping for some gardening essentials at a Lowe’s Home Improvement store with their son.

She also appeared, with her son in tow, at The War on Drugs concert in May 2024.

Despite no marriage plans for the future, it appears the couple is still going strong – or at the very least, putting on a united front for their child.

The couple even recently celebrated their tenth anniversary on June 5, 2024, based on an old post from Ritter’s Instagram.

Do Krysten Ritter and Adam Granduciel have children?

Krysten Ritter and Adam Granduciel aren’t just in a longterm relationship.

The duo are also parents to one child, a son named Bruce Julian Knight Granofsky.

Ritter debuted her pregnancy at the 2019 Oscars, which she attended with Granduciel.

She also revealed the news simultaneously on her social media.

Ritter posted a few photos of herself and her beau on Instagram, dressed to the nines, showing off her baby bump in a form-fitting, burgundy lace dress.

“Surprise!!! #oscars,” Ritter captioned her post, alongside a red heart emoji.

Ritter gave birth on July 29, 2019.

Though she frequently posts her son on social media, she typically faces him away from the camera, or covers his face with an emoji for privacy.

“My darling angel baby, thank you for choosing me to be your Mommy and for making all my dreams come true. Best gig I’ve ever had. Happy Mother’s Day!” she wrote in a 2020 post.

Ritter, Granduciel, and their son are also often spotted running errands in Los Angeles, or on family outings in nearby Ojai, California.

“I had no idea that I would get to be a kid again myself,” Krysten told Hollywood Life on her motherhood journey, as reported by Daily Mail.

“Getting to see the world through his eyes and finding joy in playing with toys and things like dancing to Baby Shark, [or] getting dressed up for Halloween is the best!”

“I am so grateful for this gift,” she added.
