What holidays does Piggly Wiggly close?
Piggly Wiggly is typically open seven days a week, all year long.
There is one major exception to this, and it’s likely the largest holiday of the year.
All Piggly Wiggly locations are usually closed on Christmas Day, December 25.
Since many Piggly Wiggly locations are independently owned and operated, store hours for other holidays may vary.
Typically, Piggly Wiggly locations will remain open on all other federal holidays, but they may open later or close earlier.
For instance, in 2024, most Piggly Wiggly locations will have limited hours on Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.
Holidays like the 4th of July, Labor Day, and Memorial Day operate business as usual.
For Easter Sunday, most store locations close at 4 pm.
While Piggly Wiggly stores are open on Thanksgiving for any last-minute dinner items, they also close around 3 pm.
Piggly Wiggly locations also tend to close early on Christmas Eve, shutting their doors around 5 pm.
For New Year’s Eve, Piggly Wiggly employees clock out by 9 pm to partake in the midnight celebrations.
They can also get a little more rest the following day, as stores open a little later – and close a little earlier – on New Year’s Day, usually open between 8 am and 8 pm.

When was Piggly Wiggly founded?
Piggly Wiggly was founded on September 6, 1916, in Memphis, Tennessee, by Clarence Saunders.
Saunders helped develop the modern sales model of self-service stores, allowing shoppers to walk through a store and pick items at their leisure, versus relying on store workers to obtain items for them.
In 1937, Piggly Wiggly also became the first supermarket chain to provide shopping carts for customers, starting with stores in Oklahoma.
Previously, shoppers only had access to baskets to carry their items.
The store also popularized point-of-sale systems at checkouts, allowing cashiers to scan items and prepare invoices for customers, who in turn would also receive receipts upon payment.
Piggly Wiggly also revolutionized how products were packaged and sold, with brand recognition becoming increasingly important as customers could choose products on their own.
In 1982, the chain was acquired by Malone & Hyde, a wholesale grocer; Malone & Hyde was later acquired by Fleming Companies in 1988.
By 2003, after Fleming had filed for bankruptcy, C&S Wholesale Grocers acquired most of the business, including regional warehouses in 2013 and 2021.
The chain’s current headquarters are in Keene, New Hampshire.
As of 2024, Piggly Wiggly has more than 500 locations in the US, predominantly in the Southeast and Midwest regions.
Many are still independently owned and operated, or under a retailers’ cooperative using the Piggly Wiggly name and branding.
