Does Meijer close for any holidays?

Meijer is typically open year-round, including for most federal holidays.

The supercenter does shut its doors for 24 hours once a year, for Christmas Day.

However, it remains open on Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas.

Meijer is also open for other major holidays this summer, like Independence Day and Labor Day.

The chain also doesn’t shut its doors on Thanksgiving or Black Friday, and remains open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Some locations, however, may open a little later than usual, or close a few hours early on those days.

It’s always best to contact your local Meijer store ahead of time to ensure their doors will be open or check the store’s website for updated hours.

Who founded Meijer?

Meijer was originally founded as Meijer’s, with the store’s first grocery store opened in 1934 in Greenville, Michigan.

The store was founded by Hendrick Meijer, a Dutch immigrant and local barber.

Hendrick’s son, Frederick Meijer, later became the chairman of the company.

The supercenter’s current co-chairs, Hank and Doug, are Hendrick’s grandsons.

By the 1960s, there were over 25 stores located in the midwest.

Meijer was unique for being one of the first stores to offer self-service shopping, shopping carts, and bargain prices on everyday needs.

It also “pioneered” the supercenter concept, offering groceries and department store items in one storefront.

Today, there are over 250 locations in the Midwest, with over 70,000 employees.

Meijer has stores and gas stations in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.
